Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi receives the Grand Chancellor, Jean-Pierre Mazery

Today the Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi received the Grand Chancellor of the Sovereign Order of Malta, Jean-Pierre Mazery. The excellent state of bilateral relations was reaffirmed during the meeting. The Order of Malta’s activities in the health and welfare sectors, developed in cooperation with Italy, were examined as well as the joint initiatives in the civil defence field. Other matters reviewed included the Order of Malta's international institutional and hospitaller programmes. The freedom of religion and protection of Christians worldwide was also discussed.

Crisis in Mali: Ordre de Malta France assists refugees in Burkina Faso

There are currently some 55,000 refugees from Mali in Burkina Faso, fleeing from the civil war that has broken out in their country. At the request of the Burkina Faso authorities, Ordre de Malta France, present in the country for over ten years and specialized in first-aid and transport of the wounded, immediately made available their human and logistic resources.

Guinea: a cooperation agreement signed with the Ministry of Health

The President of the Ordre de Malte France, Thierry de Beaumont-Beynac, visited Guinea-Conakry from 10 to 14 April to sign a cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Health. A technical agreement was also signed for the Pita surgery, point of reference for central Guinea, run by the Ordre de Malte France.

Holy Family hospital mark successful partnership in Bethlehem with USAID

A seven-year venture between the Order of Malta’s Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem and the United States Agency for International Development was launched in September 2005. It’s aim was to help improve the quality of care given to Palestinian mothers and infants in the region. Joint projects have included the training of professionals, provision of health education to families, procurement of medical equipment and the construction of seven modern fully-equipped labour rooms and an operation unit. This is to list but a few of the many achievements of this partnership.

First-Aid Training in Mali and Burkina Faso

The Ordre de Malte France has been helping to develop the first-aid network in African countries since 1998.  In Mali and Burkina Faso it runs training courses for paramedics and ambulance drivers who assist after accidents or natural disasters and operate first-aid posts during sporting or religious events.

The Order of Malta’s new project in Bulgaria

The Order’s Embassy in Sofia distributes 100 meals a day to people in need

A recent World Bank study shows that 23% of Bulgaria’s population live below the poverty line, while 41% have had to limit the use of facilities such as heating and electricity and 29% have reduced their food consumption. Following the Order of Malta’s humanitarian initiatives already running in numerous countries, and in particular those involving soup kitchens, its embassy in Sofia has been handing out 100 hot meals a day since mid-February. The meals are distributed in the courtyard of the Apostolic Exarchate, seat of the Catholic Episcopal Conference, by a group of volunteers working with the Order’s embassy.
